Ecclesiastical Coins
Coins struck by a religious authority, such as an archbishop, bishop, abbot, prior or the canons of a religious order. Such coins were common in medieval times but survived as late as the early nineteenth century, the bishops of Breslau (1817) and Gurk (1823) being the last prelates to exercise coinage rights. Coins were struck by authority of the Pope at Rome until 1870 but since 1929 coinage has been struck at the Italian state mint on behalf of the Vatican City State.
